Swiss Made Dandelion Torch WeederMay 18, 2009

This is a pretty neat device that I bought from Rittenhouse Garden Supply by mail order from Canada. It is extremely expensive in my opinion, $250 plus shipping. It's effectiveness is clearly not instaneous but does seem to kill the weed over a period of weeks when you keep super heating the weed, which supposedly kills the tap root in time. It is environmentally friendlier than herbicides, which, among other things, cause cancer, get into ground water, etc. It does not kill surrounding turf grass, but it does take much more time that selective herbicides. Organic non selective herbicides such as horticultural vinegar will kill or injure surrounding plants such as turfgrass if the plant is in contact with the chemical. What makes this weed torch different that others on the market are three things: 1)It heats the weed with a ceramic disk instead of flame. 2) It has an electric ingnition source built into the unit, that is you start it with a click of a button. 3) It doesn't constantly "flame out" like the other type weed torches. Is it worth it? Well, probably not at this price unless you are an obessive compulsive lawn geek.
